Deserts in China

Enormous fields of sand cover the whole China, especially the west and north part of the country.

Although China has rich forest and grassland resources, the per capita are very low. And most of the grassland in this country has degraded or is degrading. So China is also one of countries having severe desertification.

Taklamakan Desert , the second largest desert in the world, located in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The desert was once called "the death sea" by western explorers. It's as big as half of the desert area in China. 85% of the desert are mocing dunes.

Desert of China has a mysterious veil. Along the southern rim of the Taklamakan Desert, Buddhism came to Khotan from India in the first century BC. The world’s smallest temple has been discovered there. Desert is also an important part in Silk Road. Desert grottoes had sheltered China silk road art trove.

Probably owing to the mystery of desert, many religion culture developed from it.
